Quick guide — secure download, install, set up, and best practices.
Start here to download and install your Ledger Wallet securely. Visit Ledger.com/Start to pick the official Ledger Wallet package that matches your operating system and device. The official Ledger start page provides verified installers, step-by-step guidance, and the latest firmware. Before you download, make sure you are on the genuine Ledger website: check the browser address bar for the correct domain, verify the HTTPS lock, and never follow links from unknown emails or messages.
Choose your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) and download the Ledger Live installer. Ledger Live is the companion app that lets you manage accounts, check balances, and install coin-specific apps to your hardware device. After the download completes, run the installer and follow on-screen prompts. On macOS you may need to allow the installation in System Preferences > Security & Privacy; on Windows you may be prompted to accept a user account control request. Accept only installers obtained from the official start page.
After setting a PIN, the device will generate a recovery phrase made of 24 words. Write these words down on the provided recovery sheet and store the sheet in a safe, offline location. Do not photograph, screenshot, or store your recovery phrase digitally. Ledger will never ask you to share this phrase. The recovery phrase is the only way to restore your crypto if the device is lost or damaged.
Next, use Ledger Live to add cryptocurrency accounts. In the Manager section, install apps for the coins you plan to manage (for example Bitcoin, Ethereum). Once installed on the device, the Accounts tab will let you create and view accounts for each coin. Receive funds by generating an address in Ledger Live while confirming that same address on the hardware device’s screen. Always verify addresses on the device display before sending funds.
Security best practices: keep your recovery phrase offline and consider storing backups in separate physical locations. Never enter your recovery phrase into software on a computer or phone. Beware of phishing sites — always begin at Ledger.com/Start. Use a trusted computer and keep your operating system and antivirus up to date. If you suspect your seed phrase has been compromised, move funds to a new wallet immediately.
